Scientific Mission

Investigated applications

Our scientific mission at DLR and TU Berlin is to advance second-generation quantum information technologies. In particular, research interest is focused on the fundamentals of quantum communication, quantum simulation and also novel hybrid neuromorphic computer architectures based on broadband atomic quantum storage and single photon sources.

Quantum technologies of the second generation can be applied in a wide range of areas and enable the improvement of known technologies in many fields and on the other hand open up fundamentally new possibilities. Examples are: Quantum communication makes it possible for the first time to secure communication even against future, currently unknown attacks; the increased performance of quantum computers due to the parallelization of calculations makes the solution of previously unsolved problems within reach; quantum simulators make it possible to simulate the behavior of complex quantum systems with the help of other, highly controlled quantum systems. Quantum technology components such as coherent optical storage promise new hybrid neuromorphic computer architectures with artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities. 

The applications mentioned are based on single photon sources on the one hand and on quantum memories as key components on the other hand. For both, but especially for the latter, there is still a considerable need for research before "real" applications can be realized. The resulting research activities for the next years are summarized below.
